In May 2025, Marion Hukelmann, Co-President of the Inter-School Teaching Committee (ISTC), had the honour of representing all teachers of the European Schools at the CULT Committee of the European Parliament. The CULT Committee (Committee on Culture and Education) oversees EU policies on education, culture, youth, and sport, and monitors the European Schools system. ISTC is the body representing teaching staff across all European Schools, ensuring that teachers’ perspectives and concerns are heard at school and European level.
Mrs Hukelmann’s speech focused on the situation of Locally Recruited Teachers (LRTs), highlighting challenges such as unequal treatment compared to other staff, and the importance of supporting and retaining experienced teachers across all levels.
The presentation offered members of the European Parliament an overview of teachers’ perspectives and helped raise awareness of key issues at the highest level. Discussions at the CULT Committee have already contributed to a decision by the European Parliament to increase funding to support the European Schools, showing that such interventions can have tangible outcomes.
Mrs Hukelmann did a fantastic job, and we are extremely proud of her!
